“They won’t eat this, either,” my frustrated companion grumbled as he cut the 1/4-ounce gold spoon off and started rifling through his tackle box to find his next bait. “You think they’ll go after a topwater? Nah, that’s probably too loud. Maybe a spinnerbait? What are you throwing?”

Charlie was making a mistake I’d seen dozens of times before. Instead of accepting the conditions and adapting to the sluggish bite, he was sure that eventually he’d find that “magic bait” in his box that the fish would gobble up at first sight.
