One of the most successful new products to hit the Texas Gulf Coast
in many years is the Texas Trout Killer and its family of Killer Baits.
These Killer Baits have been developed by saltwater anglers who have
a passion for fishing the Texas Gulf Coast. These baits are designed
with a durable soft plastic which allows fisherman to consistently
catch fish after fish on a single bait.
Amongst the Family of Killer Baits are the original Texas Trout Killer,
Trout Killer II, Trout Killer II Jr., and the Texas Red Killer.
The Original Trout Killer was the first of the Killer baits to hit
the Texas Gulf Coast Market. This spectacular bait was the first of
its kind in that its solid-body design of tough durable plastic would
withstand the razor sharp teeth of Speckled Trout and the powerful
crushers of Red Fish. Recommended Jig Heads are 1/16 oz. to 3/8 oz.
When fishing deeper water or waters with strong current, the 1/8 oz.
to 1/4 oz. jig heads are most effective.
The Original Trout Killer is designed to fish deeper waters ranging
from 4 to 8 feet. This bait is ideal when drifting or wading deep
guts, channels, reefs and deep flats with minimal grass. When properly
retrieved, this bait will have a vertical (Up & Down) action that
will pass through different water columns. A savvy angler will take
a mental note to the depth or column of water which is producing fish
and concentrate his retrieve at that depth. |
The Original Trout Killer
can be retrieved in many different ways. One of the most productive
methods is allowing it to sink then giving it a quick 1-2-3 twitch
of the rod. This will allow the bait to climb in the water column.
If you want the bait to go back down in the water column, relax your
rod tip back towards the water with a very slow retrieve.
If you prefer to keep the bait climbing in the water column, increase
the speed of your retrieve while lowering the rod tip and increasing
the frequency of which you twitch the bait. This method allows the
bait to stair step its way up through the water column.
The Texas Trout Killer II Happens to be my favorite of all the Killer
Baits. It is very similar to the Original Trout Killer in that it
too has a solidbody design of tough durable plastic. In addition to
it having a split tail, this Killer Bait also has a wider, thicker
body than the original Trout Killer. This wider, thicker body
provides more buoyancy which allows it to be fished more consistently
at a particular depth of water.
When properly rigged with a lead headed jig, this killer bait displays
a very impressive life like action like no other soft plastic. Recommended
jig head sizes are 1/16 oz. to ¼ oz. The lighter jig heads
work best in the skinny waters while the heavier jig heads aremost
effective in the deeper waters where you might encounter stronger
current. I personally prefer a 1/16 oz. long shank, wide gap jig head
when fishing this bait.

| Bug Juice Trout Killer
II produced this nice 26' trout while wading a shallow shell
reef in December. |
The Trout Killer II is designed to fish water depths of 1 to 4 feet.
This killer bait works well when drifting or wading shallow waters
such as a grass flat, mud lake or shallow reefs. When properly retrieved,
the bait will deliver a side to side action that will allow you to
work it just above a grass bed or a shell reef.
When fishing the TTKII, begin working the bait just after it has hit
the water by giving it a quick 1-2-3 twitch of the rod. This will
cause the bait to dart from side to side just below the surface. If
you want the bait to go down in the water column, relax your rod tip
back towards the water with a very slow retrieve.
If you prefer to keep the bait up in the water column, increase the
speed of your retrieve while lowering your rod tip and increasing
the frequency of which you twitch the bait.
The Texas Red Killer is probably one of the most overlooked baits
on the market today. This primarily is due to the lack of understanding
on how to properly, and effectively, fish this bait. Don't let the
name of this bait fool you; it's just as deadly on trout as it is
on red fish.
 |
| Bone and White Red Killer
on shallow flats produced this hefty stringer of Trout and Reds. |
Like all the Killer Baits, the Red Killer consists of a solid body
design and a tough durable plastic that allows the angler to catch
fish after fish on a single. When properly rigged, the Red Killer
imitates a swimming mullet like none other. The Red Killer should
be rigged with a 1/16 oz. to ¼ oz. jig head. When fishing deeper
water or stronger current, the heavier jig head may be optimum.
The Red Killer is designed for fishing water depths of 1 to 4 feet.
Areas such as grass flats, sandbars, and oyster-laden grassy shorelines
is where the Texas Red Killer is most effective.
Unlike the other Killer baits, the Texas Red Killer should be retrieved
in a distinctive manner. This bait should be retrieved slow and steady
with an occasional twitch of the rod tip. When working grassy shorelines
with pot holes, you can stop your retrieve allowing the bait to momentarily
settle towards the bottom of a pot hole. When re-starting your slow
steady retrieve, first twitch your rod tip 2 -3 times to get the bait
up off the bottom and above the grass beds. This will result in fewer
hang ups.
| The Texas Trout Killer II Jr (TTKIIJR) |
|
The Texas Trout Killer II Jr. is very similar to the Trout Killer
II in that it too has a solid-body design of tough durable soft plastic
and a split tail. The difference between the two is that the Jr. is
considerably smaller than the original Trout Killer II.
This Killer Bait has proven to be deadly on Flounder. The Trout Killer
II Jr is preferred when fishing mud guts and sand flats and specifically
targeting flat fish. However, early spring when the bay waters are
starting to warm and juvenile bait fish are plentiful, the Trout Killer
II Jr. has proven to be just as reliable as any of the other killer
baits I have discussed above.
Depending on the water depth, this bait should be rigged with a 1/16
oz. to 3/8 oz. lead headed jig. When fishing the embankment of a deep
gut, a slow retrieve with a short soft twitch of the rod tip is a
sure bet for flounder. When fishing grass flats and shorelines, the
Trout Killer II Jr. will react like the original Trout Killer in that
it will produce a vertical up and down action.
The durability and action of these Killer Baits are second to none.
The strong durable plastic forms a secure and snug fit to any jig
head; whether you re using a typical slip-on or screw-lock type jig
head. Catching fish after fish, all day long, on a single bait is
a typical re-occurrence that is un-matched by any other manufacturers
soft plastic baits. You can find these killer baits in variety of
colors at your local fish and tackle dealer or by contacting The Texas
Tackle Factory at www.texastacklefactory.com.
